Squeaker For Dems In Prospect Park

Councilwoman Cristina Peralta came within 46 votes of winning the Democratic Primary in Prospect Park on Tuesday. Instead she will be replaced on the November ballot by newcomer Anand Shah who won with Councilman Adnan Zakaria. Both of them have the backing of Mayor Mohamed Khairullah, who is the Prospect Park municipal leader. When the machine totals were tallied, Peralta and Cabrera were ahead 477 and, 488 respectively to 414 for Zakaria and 405 for Shah.
Peralta and Cabrera won in three out of four districts but mail in ballots tipped the balance. Zakaria received 143 absentees; Shah, 140; Peralta, 20 and Cabrera, 17. With 1822 Democratic registered voters in the borough, 979 cast ballots for a 54% participation rate. The insurgents performed best in District 2 where Peralta and Cabrera garnered 157 and 146 votes respectively. Shah and Zakaria received 130 votes each. In District 3, Peralta had 114; Cabrera, 110; Zakaria, 88; Shah, 85. Results were close in District 1 where Zakaria and Shah received 66 tallies each; Peralta, 64; Cabrera, 60. In District 4, Peralta again led with 142 votes; Cabrera, 132; Zakaria, 130; Shah, 124.

New Officers Are Sworn In

The Prospect Park Police Department swore in two new police officers at the council meeting on April 25.

Daniel Rinaldi was swom in as a fuIl-time police officer and Christina Bernal was sworn in as a Special Police Officer 2nd
Class. "I'd like to congratulate Daniel and Christina on joining the finest police department in Passaic County, joining the fine group of men and women," Mayor Mohamed Khairutlah said at the meeting. "You've been selected by your superiors based on your qualifications, your credentials and the time you spent here.So congratulations and I wish you a safe career at Prospect Park."

Rinaldi and Bernal have both spent time within the police department as special police officers, according to Capt. Ammen Matari. He said Rinaldi was a Class 2 Special Police Officer for Prospect Park and also did security for Metlife. He said Bemal was Class 1 Special Police Officer before becoming a Class 2 and curently does security for Kohls.

Matari said Rinaldi is going through the Passaic County Police Academy as a waiver, meaning he does not have to attend the full program as he took some of those classes as a Class 2. He said Bemal is also attending the Passaic County Police Academy. He said with Rinaldi, the amount of full-time Police officers in the Prospect Park Police Departnent is 17 and with Bernal, the special officer count is up to four.

According to Borough Administrator Danielle lreland, Rinaldi will receive the trainee salary of $11.50 per hour until he completes field training and moves forward into step 1 in the Police officer salary Schedule. She said Bernal will receive $12.75 Per hour.
